Creature Beacon

A device that clips onto a pet's collar and calls home with its coordinates whenever an animal strays too far could put and end of the misery of losing a much-loved pooch or kitty.

The collar beacon, developed by GlobalPetFinder in New York, US, determines an animal's position using Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite signals, and reports these back to an animal's owner via a cellular phone network. The device is about the size of a large wristwatch and weighs 0.15 kilograms. It clips discreetly onto a pet's collar.

The Books

With LOST AND SAFE, Paul de Jong and Nick Zammuto of The Books turn in another loopy-dreamy collection of melodic narratives made up of snippets of found noises, spoken-word samples and acoustic instrumentation that carries on the “read, eat, sleep … repeat” theme of their first two albums.

Star Trek: Hidden Frontier

With Star Trek: Enterprise leaving broadcast television, fan-produced original web series like Star Trek: Hidden Frontier and Star Trek: New Voyages have stepped up production, with increased promotion and greatly improved production values.
Episode 602 of Star Trek: Hidden Frontier, entitled Dancing in the Dark , is available for download now. The web site also includes production stills, bloopers and episode previews.
Star Trek: Hidden Frontier takes place during the 24th Century, the same period as TNG, DS9 and Voyager, and is set in the Briar Patch region of space, first seen in Star Trek: Insurrection. In this new episode, the crew of the starship Excelsior and its home base Deep Space 12 are faced with "the mystery of the ancient and powerful tetrahedrons takes an unexpected and dangerous turn, while Counselor Elbrey faces mortal danger from her past."

The Universe Within

THE UNIVERSE WITHIN is an educational exhibit comprised of actual human bodies and organs that have been preserved using a method known as plastination.
This exhibit literally as well as figuratively goes "under the skin,” exposing the complexity of the human body and allowing the general public a look at what normally only doctors and scientists are allowed to see first-hand.
The goal is that visitors leave with a deeper understanding of the body’s form and function and a stronger appreciation for staying fit and healthy.

Gregory Colbert

Gregory Colbert's exhibition Ashes and snowis a loving exploration into the nature of animals in their natural habitat as they interact with human beings. No longer shown as merely a member of the family of man, humans are seen as a member of the family of animals.

New Voyages

New Voyages is our vision of Star Trek. A Star Trek set in the 23rd century and created in the 21st. It's a Star Trek with a familiar look, a familiar crew, but something new, and we think, something special.

New Voyages was created in April of 2003 by James Cawley and Jack Marshall. Our goal is to tell stories that fall within the 4th and 5th year of the five year mission. These "short films", continue the original 5-year mission of the Enterprise and are produced at a rate of 2 per year. As such we consider each short film an "event" not merely a new episode of a weekly TV show.

Gay fruit flies

For Fruit Flies, Gene Shift Tilts Sex Orientation
In a series of experiments, the researchers found that females given the male variant of the gene acted exactly like males in courtship, madly pursuing other females. Males that were artificially given the female version of the gene became more passive and turned their sexual attention to other males.

"We have shown that a single gene in the fruit fly is sufficient to determine all aspects of the flies' sexual orientation and behavior," said the paper's lead author, Dr. Barry Dickson, senior scientist at the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna. "It's very surprising.

WHAT THE #$*! DO WE KNOW?!

WHAT THE #$*! DO WE KNOW?! is part documentary, part story, and part elaborate visual effects and animations. The protagonist, Amanda, played by Marlee Matlin, finds herself in an Alice in Wonderland experience when her daily, uninspired life literally begins to unravel, revealing the uncertain world of the quantum field hidden behind what we consider to be our normal, waking reality. The fourteen top scientists and mystics interviewed in documentary style serve as a modern day Greek Chorus. The chorus members act as hosts who live outside of the story, and from this Olympian view, comment on the actions of the characters below. They are also there to introduce the Great Questions framed by both science and religion, which divides the film into a series of acts. Through the course of the film, the distinction between science and religion becomes increasingly blurred, since we realize that, in essence, both science and religion describe the same phenomena.
