Kenny Scharf

Kenny Scharf's art world star came to a mercurial rise in the 1980s. By the close of the decade he had risen to supernova status, secured a place in art history textbooks, and moved beyond the often-cliquish borders of fine art notoriety into the kingdom of pop culture celebrity. Klaus Nomi

Looks like an alien, sings like a diva - Klaus Nomi was one of the 1980s' most profoundly bizarre characters. He was a cult figure in the New Wave underground scene, a genuine counter tenor who sang pop music like opera and brought opera to club audiences and made them like it. He was a performer with a "look" so strong, that his first audiences went wild before he even opened his mouth.
Check out The Nomi Song , a film by Andrew Horn. We just saw it at the Castro Theater and loved it!

Girls Will Be Girls

Three Actresses at various places on the Hollywood food chain navigate the minefield of love, aging and ambition.
Evie (Jack Plotnick), an aging actress in the twi-dark of her career, drinks her way through the day, longing to jump-start her career and any man in the vicinity. Her roommate and verbal punching bag, Coco (Clinton Leupp), only yearns for one thing: to have a child with the doctor that performed her abortion. When Varla (Jeffery Roberson), a country girl with a bit of an eating disorder and her own dreams of making it as an actress, joins the household, their aspirations and sordid pasts come to an unforgettable boiling point.

Jason Mecier

SIGMUND FREUD (in Pills) 20x24"
A man of considerable humor and imagination, mosaic portrait artist Jason Mecier began his life puttering with beans, noodles, yarn, pom poms, felt and other inexpensive craft materials so invaluable for bazaars, scout groups, gifts and home decor. While his artwork may fool the eye, there's no fooling about his artwork-no gimmicks...no trick shots...no studio touch ups. They are one of a kind hand crafted mosaics Mercier has created with painstaking care. His portraits have gained international attention and have been featured for many years in national consumer magazines and prestigious galleries. Mr. Mecier has a deep love for people, art and collecting things; he wants to help others enjoy what he likes to do best.

"Growing up in San Francisco and Berkeley, my environment has always been rich in unconventional perspectives. I think of these photos as a melding of the influences of Dr. Seuss and Edward Weston.
When I was little(er) I fixed on the fantasy that we were living on a dust speck in a giant world. That idea is exciting and terrifying. Exciting because it means that there is so much more to learn than we can even conceive of, and terrifying because we could be squashed at any moment. I try to be like Horton, the elephant who found a world in a dust speck, and pay attention to the small worlds around me." - Audry Heller

Darker Side of Playland

Yoshitomo Nara
The Girl with the Knife
1991
Collection of SFMOMA

"Adults are often tempted to look back on childhood as a time of uncomplicated innocence. Yet many contemporary artists present a more nuanced view, often exposing the darker side of early life experiences. These paintings, sculptures, and photographs present disturbing undercurrents in childhood imagery, a trend in art today that Vicki and Kent Logan have recognized and developed as a theme in their collection."

We saw this show last year at the SF MOMA and loved it. I especially liked Yoshitomo Nara's work!
